This weekend at "the lake" ... I got my first ever lengthened cramp/charley horse. All my life I've heard of these things, and I think in fact had them before, but for seconds at a time. So I knew what one felt like, at least well enough to know that what happened to me was a charley horse.
Saturday morning, Amanda and I golfed 9 holes at the old Executive course on Highway 59 near Detroit Lakes. It was ridiculously hot, and we were rushed the first 3 holes ... so by the middle of the round already we were tired, pissy and hot. At the end of the round, we both shared a small G2. When we got back to her folks' lake place, we each had a small turkey sandwich and some chips, and I had a huge glass of water to attempt to rehydrate before stepping back outside to bake in the sun all afternoon.
I proceed to bake in the sun, then toss some frisbee around with Jeff. Midway through said frisbee-tossing, I feel a tweak in my calf ... which I immediately recognize as the beginnings of a charley horse. As is usually the case with me, however, it goes away. A couple minutes later ... while water-running for an errant toss, the thing just lets loose. I hobble closer to shore and lift up my leg to see what the hell has happened. I'm not kidding you, for 2-3 minutes a standard sized golf ball was lodged in my right calf. It was easily one of the eeriest things I've ever seen.
So then the rest of Saturday, all day Sunday ... and today ... I am hobbing around on the aftermath. I even called a couple of my buddies last night, who have experience in the charley horse area, to verify that indeed I should remain in some pain after the actual horse part of the charley goes away. Can you blame me? This is new territory for me ... I'm scared ...
